Note from Author
When planning this trip in the spring of 1969, I knew I wanted to write a book chronicling my adventures. I thought the best way to record what was happening was to write it all down in letters and mail them home along the way. Thankfully, they were all there waiting for me when I returned. In the summer of 1970, I compiled them with my notes and fresh recollections into a manuscript as the basis for the intended book. But then life got in the way.
Fast-forward to 2020. I finally found the time to dust off the manuscript, which had been hibernating for over 50 years. The story you are about to read is based on that original manuscript, with some necessary details added to create a coherent narrative. Several excerpts from those original letters have been included and edited for context and content. Here Comes the Sun is a truthful account of what occurred before, during and after the trip.
The expressions used to describe people, places, and events reflect the language and mindset of the times. There is a lot of drug and alcohol use and although I do not recommend that lifestyle today, it was a significant part of mine back then.
I hope you enjoy reading the book as much as I have enjoyed writing it and reliving all my experiences. Let’s get out on the road together, stick out our thumbs and see where it takes us.
Safe travels.
